DIRNOTES (ver 1.0) Abandoned Freeware DIRNOTES is an approach to labeling files that differs from the Windows "long filename" system. Long names are stored in a special *.DAT file rather than within the FAT itself. ========== DOSLFN (ver 0.41f) Freeware As a bonus I offer DOSLFN, a TSR that allows Microsoft "long file names" under DOS. NOTE: "SHSUCDX.COM" is required for CD-ROM support. WARNING: If at all possible, do -NOT- use this, or any other, Microsoft_long_file_name_method creation/preservation utility or TSR within pure DOS! Try instead a File Labeler (such as "DIRNOTES") which does not manipulate the FAT. This is because DOS applications and utilities were only expecting the 8.3 file name convention, and any kluge allowing these applications and utilities to manipulate the FAT to tag a file with the longer names are a disaster waiting to happen. You could very easily permanently damage your files or the file allocation tables! Remember, Windows understands an 8.3 filename created by any pure DOS application or utility just fine.
