Norton Commander (ver 4.0) Abandonware The Norton Commander is a TUI (Textual User Interface) File Manager. It only supports the standard DOS 8.3 file format. You can configure the Norton Commander to launch support programs when you double-click on a designated file extension (the configuration file is named NC.EXT). You can also create a menu of commonly used programs for quick access (the configuration file is named NC.MNU). Due to its small memory footprint, many people use the Norton Commander as their "eyes", and keep it running at all times. Norton Commander version 4, besides comming with additional viewers (including a viewer that explores ZIP archives), for the first time came with the ability to move and delete whole directory trees. With prior versions, you could only create or delete empty directories. Note that there was a later version 5, but it only added an integrated com program that is not as good as external communications programs, and that was designed primarily for using GEnie and CompuServe, two service providers that have long since ceased operation. IMHO, I would recommend that version 4 is your best Norton Commander choice.
